Mohammad K. Azarian, professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville (UE), was recently interviewed by both the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

The articles noted Azarian’s contributions to the mathematics field and service to the mathematical community over the past forty years.

The AMS interview highlighted the Azarian prize, established in 2025 by the AMS, which will recognize reviewers who review mathematical research. Azarian’s work with the AMS human-rights committee for mathematicians impacted his support for reviewers in the developing world. The inaugural AMS Azarian Prize will be awarded to Dr. Arnav Tripathy, the Benjamin Peirce assistant professor of mathematics at Harvard University, who is a leader in artificial intelligence research. The prize will be awarded on January 5, 2026, in Washington DC, at the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings. Azarian will attend the meeting to congratulate Tripathy.

The MAA interview focused on inspiring new mathematicians, and Dr. Azarian shared some of his personal mathematical journey as well as advice for those new to the field. His membership in the MAA has afforded him many opportunities, especially with the Indiana Section of the MAA, and he feels privileged to be a part of this vibrant community of mathematicians.

“I am humbled that these two mathematics organizations asked for and value my input and respect my opinion," said Dr. Azarian. "I am proud to share my journey with the hope that others may be encouraged to persevere on their mathematics journeys as well.”
