Visiting Guest Artist - Scenic Design
The University of Evansville Department of Theatre seeks qualified applicants to fill the one-year position of Visiting Guest Artist in Scenic Design (August 1, 2025, through May 31, 2026).
The Visiting Guest Artist will design three productions in the department’s five-production season in Shanklin Theatre and the May Studio.
In addition, this person will serve as the mentor to student designers and oversee properties and paint responsibilities for all five shows. This position is responsible for maintaining the properties and scenic inventory, as well as overseeing the operation, organization, and maintenance of the paint and prop shop. The position does require participating in work calls, paint calls, technical rehearsals, and assisting in the supervision of students working as scene shop personnel and/ assigned to production work. A minimal amount of classroom teaching may be included, as appropriate.
This position will also assist the Production Manager/Technical director to maintain the department’s academic and production calendar, coordination of internal-space reservations, maintaining the rehearsal and performance classroom spaces including rehearsal furniture stock maintenance, collaborate on setting and maintaining the department’s production budgets, attend design and production meetings.
The University of Evansville Department of Theatre is a nationally recognized undergraduate program with a mission of educating future professionals. Each year, faculty members travel nationwide to audition and interview over 2000 prospective students and accept a first-year cohort of 25–32 students. We have found this selective recruitment provides us with an exceptional group of creative young people with serious attitudes toward education and theatre. As a department of theatre within a liberal arts and sciences university, the program allows students to gain the broad base of knowledge they need as theatre artists. Students also receive extensive, individualized theatre training through classroom and production experiences.
Qualifications:
- MFA in Scenic Design
Preferred Experience:
- Professional experience in scenic design, and one or more of these areas: production management, technical direction, and the mentoring of undergraduate students.
