Destiny Ogburn
Criminal Justice and Sociology with minors in Social and Human Services and Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies

Class Year: 2022
Why did you choose to attend UE?
I chose UE because of the small class sizes, amount of opportunity, and the professors. My professors reached out to me as a prospective student including a personalized card with current students’ signatures on it and encouraging me to ask any questions.
How did your degree prepare you for a future career?
My degrees not only prepared me for my career but also in life. My professors shaped my outlook on more than what’s in the classroom through advising, teaching, hands-on experiences, and general life skills in and out of the classroom. My professors challenged me and held me to high expectations they developed by building rapport with me. As I prepare for graduate school, having senior seminar where you create, develop, research, and present your findings, has been extremely helpful as most undergraduate programs do not. It catches the eye of graduate schools. My professors also encouraged us to attend career fairs on campus.
What activities or organizations were you involved with at UE? How did these impact you and your college career?
At UE, I was involved in Student Government Association, Student Christian Fellowship, Game Players Society, and volunteering through UE. I was also part of Phi Mu sorority and held many different positions within each. I participated in two different ChangeLabs, including Tiny Homes and Queer Theory and Activism, which allowed students to make real world change through advocacy, leadership, community, and creativity. I was also an intern for my department and provided outreach to alumni. I participated in a research symposium for Gerontology. I also served on a panel for prospective students to ask questions and gain insight on my specific program. I was also part of Venturing Crew, where I learned how to ski and canoe for the first time. These organizations allowed me to grow bonds with students I would not otherwise cross in path, developed me personally and professionally, and created lasting impacts beyond campus.
What makes UE a special place? How did our campus shape your college experience?
UE is a special place because of the unique experiences you invoke while on your journey. I made lasting friendships with people all around the world. While attending UE, I did not have to contact my professors for advice or guidance, because they were proactive (which others outside of UE don’t always get). UE also provided me with hands-on experience including the Evansville Police Department Citizens Academy, ChangeLabs, educational field trips, study abroad, and Career Development.
What advice would you share with incoming students?
My best advice would be to get involved and be open to trying new things. You never know what doors will open by saying yes to an opportunity!
Why do you recommend the University of Evansville?
Each person has a story to tell, learn from, and experience. UE is home. The faculty, students, and curriculum make the University of Evansville a great place for experience, exploration, creativity, learning, and opportunity!
How has UE been affordable for you?
UE has been affordable for me based on FASFA, two scholarships, being a student worker, 21st Century Scholars, and college credits.
Did you visit UE before deciding to attend? How did it shape your college decision?
I did visit UE before making my decision. I remember attending Road Trip myself and being both excited and nervous about meeting so many new people. This experience shaped my decision because of its unique nature and honesty from current students. I met people who have turned into mentors and lasting friends beyond our four years. This experience was unlike any other college I had gotten accepted to.
