Internships

The HSA program offers the dual strengths of appropriate courses to provide the knowledge base and extensive internships, which gives students the experience necessary to function successfully in the demanding and complex health care system. Each bachelor's degree student completes two 150-hour internships and all BS/MS students complete a total of four internships. These provide the student with significant real-world exposure, under professionals who act as mentors. Students have the opportunity to select either a part-time or full-time internship that may last for one or more academic terms, or a summer. They can be paid or unpaid.

Internships Encourage Growth, Exploration

Employers offer internships for many reasons. They see student interns as fruitful and economical resources with which they can accomplish projects not otherwise possible. They believe interns bring enthusiasm and new ideas into work settings and make strong employees. Just as importantly, employers feel an increasing commitment to education and want to help train students to assume responsible roles in society.

Whatever the goals may be for an internship, the key words are planning, doing and reflecting. Internships require students to act as regular workers and observe the work environment. Day-to-day exposure gives them the chance to interpret what goes on in both the external environment of the host organization and in themselves.
