Dr. Junyi Duan is an Assistant Professor of Construction Management at the University of Evansville, which he joined in 2026. He earned a Ph.D. in Technology, specializing in Construction Management Technology, from Purdue University, along with an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida. His research focuses on digital twins, distributed sensing, and computational modeling to support the construction, rehabilitation, and resilience of aging infrastructure. He is passionate about connecting classroom theory to real-world construction practice and enjoys helping students build the technical judgment they will need on the job site.
Education
- Ph.D. in Technology (Construction Management Technology), Purdue University
- M.S. in Civil Engineering (thesis-based), University of Florida
- B.E. in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering), East China Jiaotong University
Research Interests
- Construction and Infrastructure Resilience Modeling: Computational modeling — finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and fluid–structure and soil–structure interaction — to inform construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance decisions for infrastructure exposed to natural hazards and underground construction conditions.
- Innovative Construction Materials and Methods: Multi-scale computational and data-driven modeling of construction materials, including cementitious and composite systems; virtual testing and machine learning (ML)-assisted evaluation of material performance to support material selection and construction quality assurance.
- Construction Technology and Digital Twins: Real-time distributed sensing (DFOS), digital twin-based 3D visualization, and fusion of sensing data with physics-based and data-driven models to support construction quality control, structural health monitoring (SHM), and predictive maintenance planning across the project lifecycle.
