Groundskeeper

The University of Evansville (UE) is looking for a hardworking, reliable, and detail-oriented Groundskeeper to join our Facilities Management team. This role is responsible for ensuring our campus remains safe, accessible, and beautiful year-round. From the first blooms of spring to the snows of winter, the Groundskeeper is the guardian of UE’s "curb appeal" and a key player in supporting major campus events.

Key Responsibilities

The Groundskeeper maintains all walkways, roadways, parking lots, and landscapes to ensure a presentable and professional environment. Your main duties will include:

  • Seasonal Landscape Care: Execute a rotating schedule of grounds care including mowing, edging, aerating, fertilizing, and maintaining planter beds.
  • Winter Operations: Ensure the safety of the campus community by removing snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways using shovels, salt, and de-icing equipment.
  • Campus Pride & Cleanliness: Maintain a litter-free environment by regularly emptying trash containers and cleaning debris from campus features, including fountains.
  • Event Support & Logistics: Assist in the setup and teardown for major University traditions such as Commencement, Open Houses, and Honors Convocations. This includes moving furniture, lab equipment, and athletic gear as needed.
  • Equipment Stewardship: Operate and perform minor maintenance on various tools and vehicles, including power mowers, blowers, saws, tractors, and forklifts to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Trade Support: Aid various maintenance trades (plumbing, electrical, etc.) with general clean-up of job sites.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (OR 12 months of relevant experience).
  • License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Physical Ability: Must be able to perform frequent lifting, climbing, and moving in various weather conditions.
  • Communication: Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions, including assembly schematics for equipment.

Technical Knowledge & Skills

  • General knowledge of gardening and landscape methods, including weed and pest identification.
  • Ability to safely operate power tools and light mechanized equipment (tractor mowers, trenchers, hoists).
  • Understanding of health and safety practices applicable to grounds work.

Working Conditions

This is a physically active role that requires working outdoors in both hot and cold temperatures. The position involves exposure to environmental allergens (grasses, pollens) and occasional work around hazardous materials (asbestos or solvents) following strict safety protocols.
