UE Experiences

After attending the University of Evansville to pursue a degree in the fine arts, with a focus in painting, the artist was surprised by his immediate attraction to the processes associated with the production of fine art functional, ceramic vessels. After only one semester of clay work, the artist switched his major, and clay has been the focal point of his daily work ever since. He briefly attended graduate studies at the University of Kentucky in 2004, but financial difficulties outside of his control forced him to leave academia and make a path of his own. With almost no money, he immediately started The Meadows Pottery and built a small soda kiln in his garage studio. By the following fall, he was juried into two important and well respected arts associations and was exhibiting in galleries, taking wholesale orders, and doing craft fairs. Over the last six years, he has built the business up to the point where he has two wood kilns, one of which is the largest in the area. He has also been able to fund with his pottery sales, a large kiln shed, and a 1400 sq. foot studio, gallery, and bunkhouse, all of which are located together on his step-father's historic farm. Now with better funding, Matthew is again in search of a higher education and greater opportunities to expend his business.
