John C. Moore Honors Scholars

Each year, a select group of Honors Scholars will be awarded a full-tuition Moore Scholarship.

This highly selective scholarship has been named for John C. Moore, the original UE Changemaker who dreamed of creating a college for his community. His vision became a reality on February 10, 1854, when the original charter for the nation’s fifth co-educational college was drafted. Although the name of that school has changed from Moores Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institute to the University of Evansville, this full-tuition scholarship recognizes that Moore’s legacy lives through the exceptional work of current UE students.

John C. Moore Scholarship Recipients are Honors Scholars who have a deep interest in developing their changemaking and leadership skills. Through the application process, in addition to embodying some of the qualities listed above, they demonstrate an exceptional aptitude for communication, collaboration, and continued growth.

Application for the Moore Scholarship

Beginning with the incoming class of 2027, students interested in the John C. Moore Scholarship must complete a separate Moore Scholarship application.

  • Submitting an application for the UE Honors Program does not automatically place a student under consideration for the Moore Scholarship. Students who wish to be considered for both programs must submit both applications by their respective deadlines.
  • The Moore Scholarship application must be submitted by October 26, 2026 to be considered for the upcoming entering class.

Application Requirements

Any incoming first-year student interested in becoming a John C. Moore Scholar will be required to upload the following items into the application portal:

  1. An Artifact: An artifact that demonstrates how the student embodies at least two Honors Scholar characteristics: curiosity, self-awareness, humility, empathy, resilience, and creativity. For example, students might select an argumentative essay from a high school class, documentation of a service or creative project, a vision board expressing a personal viewpoint, a research proposal, or a changemaking idea. It could also be something we haven't imagined.
  2. A Brief Rationale: A 250-word rationale answering the following questions: Why did you choose this artifact? What UE Honors Scholar characteristics does it demonstrate?
  3. A Resume or List of Activities: A resume or list of activities that highlights the student's experiences, involvement, interests, leadership, service, employment, or other accomplishments.

John C. Moore Scholarship Interview Requirement

Students applying for the John C. Moore Scholarship must be available to attend an in-person interview on November 21, 2026 if selected to advance to the interview stage.

Selected students will be invited to campus to interview with the selection committee about their application portfolio and participate in activities designed to evaluate their communication and collaborative skills.

Please keep this requirement in mind when completing your application. Attendance at the November 21 interview is required, and exceptions will not be made for students who are unable to attend.

The Institute is currently in its pilot phase and is being developed by students through the Reimagining Honors ChangeLab. The experience includes lectures and workshops during the first semester and a service project during the second semester. The two experiences must be completed in order but do not need to be completed within the same academic year.
