Class of 2012, BFA in Creative Writing

What was your favorite part of studying Creative Writing at UE?

I loved the interest faculty took in helping me to professionalize and prepare for graduate school. Creative Writing and Literature faculty set me up with internships and research assistantships that gave me a strong sense the kinds of opportunities I could take advantage of after graduating.

What did you experience in UE's CRW department that feels special/unique to our program?

A lot of the extra work the department did focused on celebrating students' achievements and validating our hard work. I greatly appreciated The Ohio River Review and the writing contest.

What was your favorite Creative Writing class and why?

This is a tough one. I think my introduction to fiction class (I forget the number) that I took with Dr. Cirino was the first writing class where I really felt like a writer and I began to feel like I could articulate what I wanted my writing to do, which really helped empower me when it came to my writing decisions further down the line. But I also really enjoyed the Intro to Poetry and Screenwriting classes with Dr. Baer as well as the Intro to Creative Nonfiction class I took with Paul Bone.

What are you up to now?

At the moment, I'm in the midst of a PhD program in Creative Writing and Nineteenth Century Studies at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. As part of my work here, I get to teach a variety of classes, such as Rhetoric and Composition, Intro to Creative Writing, Intro to Creative Nonfiction, Children's Literature, and Women's Literature.

I'm absolutely still writing. Right now, I'm working on my dissertation, a novel project which was inspired by a study abroad trip to India I took during my time at UE. An essay of mine just won the New Ohio Review's creative nonfiction contest and was published in their most recent issue.
