Introduction

Sociology studies how behavior is influenced by our social environment, including the informal groups and large social organizations to which we belong. Students seeking to explore and learn about society and human behavior will find the opportunity to challenge themselves in UE's Sociology program. Courses are designed to develop students’ analytical and theoretical skills, preparing them for success in both graduate school and professional fields.

  • Sociology majors regularly score above the 95th percentile for the major field test
  • 100 percent of students complete an internship and professional development
  • 85 percent of Sociology students double major at UE. Popular second majors include Criminal Justice and Psychology. Many students also add a minor to their degree, such as Social and Human Services or Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies.
  • UE Sociology is the only program that requires independent research, an internship, and professional development

Faculty work closely with students through academic advising and undergraduate research, and the small class sizes provide personalized and supportive learning.

"UE Sociology helped me tremendously in my graduate program. While others in my cohort were stunned and struggling with the thesis process, I had a lot less anxiety around it due to projects and assignments I completed in the Sociology program. It was not easy, but I felt extremely prepared for graduate school. My time at UE also very much prepared me to be an incredible therapist. I learned a lot about how people work and why they do the things they do. The systemic nature of the Sociology program prepared me to feel confident in seeing clients of all kinds of populations and presenting problems. I wouldn’t be half the therapist I am today without UE Sociology and Dr. Plikuhn." Molly Thomas ’20

4+1 Pathway

Students can earn a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Master of Science in Leadership (MSL) in just five years at UE. The MSL program is offered 100 percent online and offers five areas of concentration. Interested students should discuss this opportunity with their academic advisor.

Study Abroad

Approximately 65 percent of Sociology students choose to study abroad at Harlaxton, the University’s study abroad center in Grantham, England. With classes just four days per week, students can spend the weekend exploring European culture and developing a global perspective.

Each summer, led by Program Director Dr. Mari Plikuhn, a Death and Dying course is offered at Harlaxton. In addition to the class sessions held in the Manor, students have a truly unique experience visiting the following sites:

  • Local cemeteries
  • A funeral home in Nottingham
  • Westminster Abbey
  • Crossbones Cemetery
  • Jack the Ripper tour
  • Royal Armory in Leeds
  • The British Museum to discuss the ethics of bodies on display
