The University of Evansville (UE) will welcome home one of its former student-athletes next week as the Indiana Football Hall of Fame celebrates Randy Mattingly as a member of its 2026 class.
The Hall of Fame celebration honoring Mattingly will take place Friday, Oct. 16, in Eykamp Hall on the University of Evansville main campus. Approximately 150 guests are expected to attend the evening, including former UE football players, friends, family members and members of the Evansville community.
For Mattingly, the evening will bring him back to the university where he developed as a student-athlete and built the foundation for a professional football career. A native of Evansville and graduate of the former Rex Mundi High School, Mattingly played quarterback for the Purple Aces in 1971 and 1972. He earned All-Indiana Collegiate Conference honors in both seasons and also competed in baseball, basketball and track and field during his time at UE.

Following his UE career, Mattingly was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 1973 NFL Draft. He later played in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Mattingly's connection to UE also runs deep through his family. His older brother, Jerry, played four seasons of basketball at UE under legendary coach Arad McCutchan and served as team captain during his senior season, when the Aces advanced to the NCAA College Division finals. Mattingly is the older brother of former Major League Baseball player and current interim manager for the Philadelphia Phillies Don Mattingly.
"Randy Mattingly's story is part of the story of the University of Evansville," said UE President Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz. "He came to UE as a student-athlete, built relationships that have lasted a lifetime and went on to represent Evansville and the University of Evansville at the highest levels of his sport. We are proud to welcome him and his family back to campus as he receives this well-deserved recognition."
In March, Mattingly was selected as one of three Region 9 members of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame's 2026 class.
