UE Alumni Association Awards to be Presented at Founders Day Luncheon

Posted: Thursday, February 11, 2016

The University of Evansville Alumni Association will present its annual Alumni Awards at the Founders Day luncheon, on Sunday, February 21, at noon in Eykamp Hall, Ridgway University Center. The awards are given to alumni who have achieved personal success and contributed exceptional services to their community and to the University. This year’s Alumni Awards recipients are Joyce Germaine Bowles, David T. Bertorello (posthumously), and John C. Barner.

Bowles, who will receive the Distinguished Alumna Award, became an army nurse during the Vietnam War. After a successful career in the army, she became a nurse educator and served as dean of the School of Professional Studies and chair of the Department of Nursing at Bowie State University in Maryland. She has been an active participant in local, national and international forums, addressing issues that impact educational programs, policy development and community services.

Bertorello is being honored posthumously with the Edie Bates Volunteer Services Award. Before his death in 2015, Bertorello was a volunteer for the University, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership and the Indiana Donor Network.  He also served two terms on the UE Alumni Association Board of Directors and helped develop the University’s Indianapolis Alumni Network.

Barner will receive the Samuel Orr Honorary Alumnus Award because of his success during his 13 years as vice president of UE’s Office of Development. His efforts helped raise funds for UE’s British campus, Harlaxton College, the Ridgway University Center, Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building, the University’s library renovation, and the construction of the greenhouse on campus.
