Maintenance Technician - Plumber
The University of Evansville (UE) is seeking a skilled and reliable Maintenance Technician - Plumber to join our Facilities Management team. Key Responsibilities
The Maintenance Technician - Plumber performs skilled trade work while supporting general campus maintenance initiatives. Your main duties will include:
- Plumbing System Mastery: Test, repair, and maintain fixtures, valves, pumps, faucets, and backflow preventers across campus.
- Specialized Lab Support: Maintain institutional applications in medical and chemistry labs, ensuring complex piping and fixtures meet operational standards.
- Installation & Demolition: Follow blueprints and oral instructions for the demolition of old systems and the installation of new piping, equipment, and components.
- System Troubleshooting: Perform basic and advanced troubleshooting, including re-piping and clearing blocked lines using power equipment.
- Infrastructure & Utility Care: Maintain internal and external building envelope components and demonstrate knowledge of steam, water, and natural gas distribution systems.
- Collaborative Maintenance: Assist other maintenance technicians with minor building repairs, furniture maintenance, and the upkeep of specialized capital equipment.
- Safety Compliance: Recognize and mitigate hazards such as dangerous chemicals or asbestos; strictly follow and enforce all university safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience: 1–2 years of experience in plumbing systems or an equivalent combination of technical training and field experience.
- Skills: Proficiency with hand and power tools applicable to the plumbing trade; ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of water, steam, and natural gas distribution system maintenance.
- Physical Ability: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb stairs/ladders, and work in awkward or high locations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensure: A Journeyman Plumber’s License or a City of Evansville Plumbing License is highly preferred.
- Specialized Training: Advanced training in the administration of plumbing maintenance systems.
Working Conditions
This position is physically active and requires working in various environments, including exposure to hot and cold outdoor temperatures. The role involves working around hazardous materials (solvents, asbestos) following strict safety protocols. Frequent standing, bending, twisting, and repetitive motion of the wrists and hands are required. Candidates must be able to operate a motorized vehicle for campus travel.
