Admission to the Mechanical Engineering Program
The mechanical engineering program's requirements are established to provide the best background for the program's curriculum and student success. The requirements focus on appropriate preparation for the program. These requirements are the same as those for admission to the School of Engineering and Computer Science.
Minimum High School Preparation Requirements
- Three-and-one-half years of mathematics with an average grade of B comprised of algebra, plane geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and/or calculus
- Two years of science with an average grade of B including at least one year of chemistry with a laboratory
- Four years of English
- Applicants whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 70 or IELTS score of 6.0
- Highly recommended additional high school course work includes: – One or more years of physics – Additional chemistry – Additional mathematics such as analytic geometry, college algebra, calculus – Two or more years of a foreign language
There are two admission tracks for the mechanical engineering program, the test optional track and the standardized test track.
Test Optional Track
Students who have chosen the test optional application process must complete University admission requirements. Once the applicant is admitted to the University, an interview between the applicant and an engineering faculty member will be scheduled to complete the admission process. Student extracurricular activity, work experience, military service or other applicable activities that support an engineering career will be discussed. Demonstrated past work ethic will be evaluated.
Standardized Test Track
The mechanical engineering program's standardized test requirements are established to provide the best background for the program's curriculum. Applicants in this track must demonstrate either a SAT (MATH only) score of 560 or higher or an ACT (MATH only) score of 25 or higher.
