Assistant Professor of Archaeology

The University of Evansville invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time position as Assistant Professor of Archaeology to start on August 1, 2024. We seek candidates with expertise in the archaeology of Greece in any periods from the late prehistoric through the early Medieval. While the field of research is open, a commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the past is a must. Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching for both non-majors in General Education courses and archaeology majors in survey and upper-level courses. We seek an amiable colleague who enjoys interacting with undergraduates and engaging them in research. Affiliation with an on-going field project in Greece or in the areas of Greek colonization in the Mediterranean, to which the faculty member could bring undergraduates during the summer, is a plus. The successful applicant must have a completed PhD in Classical Archaeology, Anthropological Archaeology, or a related field by the contract start date.

A normal teaching load includes seven courses spread over two semesters with the expectation that faculty will participate in department duties such as recruitment and university-wide duties such as serving in faculty governance. In addition to an introductory survey course in the archaeology of ancient Greece, the faculty member will be expected to teach upper-level courses in their area of expertise as well as in interdisciplinary subjects from the field of Classics or Anthropology.

The University of Evansville is a small, private university located in Indiana near the border with Kentucky. The university features professional programs and is particularly strong in the healthcare field while also providing a liberal arts foundation and traditional liberal arts majors. The Department of Archaeology is one of the most vibrant and recognized departments on campus with a growing number of undergraduate majors. Our new hire will be replacing a retiring Greek archaeologist. This year we created a new anthropology program headed by a recently hired anthropology faculty member. The department features a lab outfitted with basic equipment and storage and we have a strong relationship with local museums, archives, and an archaeological CRM firm to whom we send interns. Evansville is also a very affordable place to live.

The applicant must complete the online application at https://www.evansville.edu/offices/hr/employment-application-form-faculty.cfm. Please upload a cover letter explaining your area of research, a CV, a statement on your teaching philosophy, a statement regarding your commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and contact information for three references in a single pdf (one complete application package) in the “Upload Resume” section. We will begin reviewing applications and contacting references on December 15 with interviews via Zoom to follow in January.
